Getting Volunteers' Week off to a Sure Start

When people think about what a volunteer looks like, they might imagine someone organising a bake sale, a friendly face with a collection bucket outside a supermarket, or perhaps helping on the till in the local charity shop.

Whilst all these forms of volunteering are incredibly valuable, the teams at two Sure Start Children’s Centres and Nurseries in Thetford and Norwich are offering something altogether different. They are offering volunteering opportunities where you might improve your play-doh modelling skills or find yourself singing one of the all-time greats like Wheels on the Bus!

The teams, based at the centres on Kingsway, Thetford and Humbleyard, Bowthorpe, are looking for volunteers who would like to join them to help them support children as they learn, play and develop.

Rachel Sandells, Nursery Manager (pictured) said: “Volunteers are so helpful in the nurseries, as they bring a range of different skills and experience to the teams.

“They show enthusiasm to learn and develop and they support workers to enhance the children’s development, becoming part of a really supportive team.

"The roles offer a great chance to gain new skills and experiences or perhaps the chance to see what a future career in family support or childcare might involve.

“We’re looking forward to more volunteers joining us.”

Both children’s centres, two of four run by Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust in the county, and funded by Norfolk County Council, offer services to families with children under the age of five.

They are home to diverse teams of support workers and therapists, who offer a range of activities from child health clinics, breastfeeding support, baby massage, baby group and stay and play.

As part of Volunteer’s Week (June 1-7) NCH&C’s volunteering team is holding drop in sessions to give people who are interested in finding out more about volunteering, a chance to come along and see the centres, and speak to a member of the team.

You don’t have to have volunteered before, full training will be given, and travel expenses are reimbursed. To find out more about how to volunteer and make a difference.
